Becoming a Friend of the World

Sunday 23 Feb | 10:30am – 2:30pm

In these difficult times a world free from suffering and true happiness can seem impossible, yet it is Buddha’s most fundamental teaching that each and every living being has this potential. In fact, Buddha taught that each of us has the potential to attain the supreme happiness of enlightenment.

In this special course, you will learn how to become a modern day Bodhisattva. Someone who is determined to attain enlightenment in order to fulfill their compassionate wish to free everyone from suffering.

In the first session Gen Tubchen will share a special practice that combines six perfections into one meditation as you powerfully and confidently take away suffering and give happiness to others.  She will explain the Bodhisattva vow, a spiritual promise we can make to follow the inner path to Enlightenment for the benefit of others.  She will also talk on the good qualities of creating and being part of a Bodhisattva community.

Then in the second session those that wish can take the actual Bodhisattva vows with a beautiful ceremony that combines extensive offerings and prayers with making a commitment to follow this compassionate, hopeful path to enlightenment.

By taking the Bodhisattva Vows, even on a very aspiring level, we create a strong inner foundation for nurturing an altruistic and inspiring way of life.  Then we can be joyful and confident in our ability to bring real benefit to others and our world. In this way we can truly become a friend to the world who affects everyone they meet in the best possible way.

Gen Kelsang Tubchen is the Resident Teacher at KMC Aberdeen. An inspiring and gifted teacher who ordained as a Buddhist nun in 2003, she is loved for her warm heart, her caring attitude and her clear, powerful and practical teachings.

“When we meet others we should display a smiling face towards them, abandon all frowns, and as a friend of the world, generate love and compassion.  A Bodhisattva communicates with others honestly, and motivated by a kind heart, speaks gently and endearingly to them.”

Meaningful to Behold

“I really enjoyed today's class and the breathing meditation.  It's really nice having an actual practising Buddhist leading the teachings for a change. I've been using Calm and Headspace for a long time and thought I would try this for 30 days too whilst we're all staying indoors.”
