Nyungnay Fasting Purification Retreat
Mon 14 – Tues 15 April | from 6.30am
NYUNGNAY PURIFICATION RETREAT
This two day retreat, which is done in conjunction with Thousand-Armed Avalokiteshvara practice, is a very powerful method for purifying negative karma of body, speech, and mind, for pacifying strong delusions such as desirous attachment and hatred and for increasing our compassion.
The practice is done over two days, with the eight Mahayana precepts being taken at the beginning of each day. On the first day it is customary to abstain from all meals apart from lunch. On the second day we engage in a complete fast, abstaining from all food and drink for 24 hours. On both days, we do three sessions of meditation, combining prostrations with chanted meditation. Those who are unable to engage in a complete fast can participate in the sessions on the second day, provided they take the Mahayana precepts on that day.
Everybody is welcome.
Recommended Reading
This Buddhist ritual practice retreat will not be guided. If you wish you can read about purification practice in general to prepare for the retreat (see Joyful Path of Good Fortune and The Bodhisattva Vow) and this practice in particular (see the booklets A Pure Life and Drop of Essential Nectar, which we’ll be using during the retreat). All of these are available from Tharpa Publications and in our shop.
Please Note – Important Information
In order to take part in the retreat sessions on either day, it is necessary first to have taken the Mahayana Precepts at 6:30am on that day.
If you wish to live-stream the retreat, those who have previously received Mahayana Precepts from a qualified Kadampa Teacher can take them by themselves at 6:30am each day. N.B. If you have never received the Mahayana Precepts, you must first attend and receive them in person at the Centre if you wish to take part in the retreat.
Please contact epc@meditateinaberdeen.org to book or to ask any questions and find out more about the retreat commitments.
